Holi is one of the most important festivals in India Holi is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated. Since ancient times the holy festival has been celebrated as a way to welcome spring on the full moon day in the month of Fagun which is in March. Holi festival may be celebrated in various names and people of different states might be following different traditions.
Stories of Holi Festival
According to Bhagavata Purana, there was a demon king Hiranyakashipu who was granted a boon by Lord Brahma, which made him nearly invincible. Hiranyakashipu became arrogant and demanded that everyone worship only him, but his son Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu.
Despite Hiranyakashipu's numerous attempts to kill Prahlad, he always survived, protected by Vishnu's grace. One day, Holika, the demoness sister of Hiranyakashipu, tried to burn Prahlad alive, but due to his unwavering faith, Prahlad emerged unscathed while Holika was consumed by the fire.
This victory of good over evil is celebrated during Holi, with the burning of Holika's effigy on the eve of the festival. The next day, people celebrate by smearing each other with colored powders and water, signifying the triumph of love, joy, and the arrival of spring. Holi is also a time for reconciliation, forgiveness, and the strengthening of relationships. It's a vibrant and joyous celebration of life and the victory of good over evil.
Holi 2024: March 24 or 25 :
This year, Holi falls on March 25, preceded by Holika Dahan on March 24th. The rituals of Holika Dahan include lighting a bonfire and praying for the victory of good over evil.
Holi Celebrated across India
Holi is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India. It is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the country and is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.
The northern states of Uttar Pradesh, especially in cities like Mathura and Vrindavan are Legendary. The week-long festivities include Lathmar Holi, where women playfully hit men with sticks, and the throwing of colors and water.
Bihar, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm, with people smearing each other with colors and enjoying traditional sweets like Gujiya and Malpua. In Rajasthan, great pomp and show. The cities of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur come alive with vibrant processions, folk music, and dance performances.
In West Bengal, Holi is known as Dol Purnima or Dol Jatra. It is celebrated with processions carrying the idol of Radha and Krishna on a decorated palanquin, accompanied by singing and dancing.
Gujarat celebrated as Rangwali Holi. People gather in communities to play with colors, dance to traditional folk music, and enjoy festive delicacies.
Each region may have its unique customs and traditions associated with Holi, but the underlying spirit of joy, love, and camaraderie remains the same. People come together to play with colors, exchange sweets and greetings, and strengthen bonds with friends and family. It's a time when social barriers are momentarily forgotten, and everyone joins in the festive revelry.
